I have many patients in my chiropractic office that after a whiplash injuryfrom a car accident first go to their medical doctor. When you look at the research this does not make sense. Studies done at the University Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in Bristol, UK has shown “43% percent of patients will suffer long-term symptoms following ‘whiplash’ injury, for which no conventional medical treatment has proven to be effective.”
By conventional medical treatment the author means physical therapy, drugs and surgery. These treatments are all viable and necessary for the right conditions. If you snapped your arm in half and came to my office, I would recommend you go to the emergency room and see a medical doctor for surgery. Going to a chiropractor’s office for a broken arm poking out of the skin is the same as going to a medical doctor’s office for a whiplash injury. Broken bones are outside my area of expertise but whiplash injuries are the exact type of condition chiropractor’s are extensively trained to treat.
When you are in a whiplash injury the bones in your spine are knocked out of alignment. There is no drug in the world that is going to put them back in alignment. The only treatment that will put those bones back in alignment is a chiropractic adjustment. These misalignments are serious because they cause soft tissue injury and the body responds to this injury by healing the area with a process that is called the fibrosis of repair. The body will start laying down fibrotic tissue to heal the injured soft tissue.
If you do not get these misalignments corrected at a chiropractic office, your body will heal out of alignment. This can lead to a serious secondary condition called degenerative joint disease andchronic pain. The longer the fibrotic tissue is allowed to cement the spine out of alignment, the longer it will take to correct the misalignments. If you wait too long and there is too much degeneration in the spinal joints sometimes correction is no longer possible. The joints allow the bones to move and if the joint is destroyed the bone can no longer move. This is the reason 43% of whiplash patients have chronic pain if they don’t go see a chiropractor.
Research was done by the same department in Bristol, UK to determine the effects of chiropractic in a group of 28 patients who had been referred with chronic ‘whiplash’ syndrome. The results were “twenty-six (93%) patients improved following chiropractic treatment.” This research clearly shows chiropractic care is the most effective choice for neck pain following a car accident or any type of whiplash injury.
If you or anyone you know has suffered from a whiplash injury it could be from a car accident or a fall go see a chiropractor immediately.
